Hamilton Hotel Washington, D.C., an iconic 318-room art deco property at 14th and K Streets, announced details to transform into an independent, modern luxury hotel, with enhancements rolling out this fall and a full completion expected by spring 2019 on on Sept 18. The refurbishments will capture the unique essence of Washington, D.C. and offer a superior new guest experience, including a re-designed lobby and newly concepted restaurant and bar. The hotel will also unveil exclusive partnerships around new staff uniforms, themed guest suites and elevated guest amenities.

Originally designed by the renowned French-born architect Jules-Henrí de Sibour in 1922, Hamilton Hotel boasts an iconic history as an acclaimed hot spot in the 1930s and 40s and the site of many past Inaugural Balls. The lobby redesign, led by Atlanta-based hospitality design firm, designONE studio, transforms the prominent entrance space by embracing its original history and ornate Beaux-Arts architectural style, while incorporating modern luxury and comfort. The design creates a poetic space where simplicity and proportion are the key elements.
The lobby’s interiors, both art and furniture, are inspired by the refined and avant-garde taste of many prominent American families of the 1930s, such as the Rockefellers. Artwork includes American landscape paintings, and modernist furniture is either designed, or reflective of Jean-Michel Frank, a prominent creative visionary from this era and known for his minimalist interiors decorated with simple and elegant forms in luxurious material. The interiors are inspired by the guiding principle of Frank’s work: “Elegance is elimination.” Pieces belong to a rich color palette of burgundy with yellow accents, with materials comprised of velvet, leather and fine woods. Polished black and white marble floors with a classic beaux arts pattern serve as the lobby’s foundation.
The hotel’s new lobby will also feature an intimate lounge bar that is hidden by day and revealed to patrons as the clock strikes happy hour. Part bar, part meeting place and part library, the exclusive space hints at de Sibour’s early life as a member of Yale’s Skull and Bones Society and transports guests back to his days as a Prohibition-era architect. Patrons are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling displays of distinctive vintage books and accessories set off by wood paneling details and intricate millwork moldings.
Hamilton Hotel will also transform its existing lobby-level 14K restaurant and bar and introduce an entirely new dining concept based on the traditional Osteria, serving approachable Italian cuisine, including authentic Neapolitan pizza. The design incorporates touches of vintage Italy, including antique pizza peels and cutting boards, travel photos, and custom art mirrors.
Hamilton Hotel will enhance each of its contemporary guestrooms and, in collaboration with exclusive new partners, create several themed suites that capture the unique essence of Washington, D.C. The first such specialty suite, curated in partnership with Washington, D.C.’s Newseum, pays homage to Alexander Hamilton’s news heritage as the creator of the New York Evening Post in 1801, and support’s the museum's mission to increase public understanding of the importance of a free press and the First Amendment.
Dubbed “The Newsroom,” the new suite will showcase the Newseum’s signature “Today’s Front Pages,” exhibit, a daily gallery of the front page news from more than 800 international newspapers, on iPads. A second iteration of The Newsroom will celebrate the museum’s groundbreaking exhibit, Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement, opening on March 8, 2019.
As part of its reinvention, the hotel will cater to the distinctive needs of female travelers by curating a menu of elevated beauty and wellness amenities that can be requested when booking a reservation, or upon check-in.
Hamilton Hotel has also enhanced its health and fitness offerings as the first and only US hotel to have an exclusive fleet of Lopifits, an eclectic walking bike imported from the “bicycle capital the world”—The Netherlands.
