Vāstu, the word, generated from Vastu –the object or the dwelling. Shastra means knowledge of rules or science. The subject which gives principles of positive energy for a space is called Vastu Shastra.
Would you believe it, if I told you that planet earth was lifeless for a million years after its formation?
You would definitely say that is improbable.
What if I told you that, with gradual changes, there was eventually life on earth and humans came at the end of evolution? Before the human civilization established itself, our ancient planet saw all kinds of life from microorganisms to giant creatures. However, these did not survive since they could not adapt to the changes occurring on earth. Whereas man, the last product of evolution, not only survived but also adapted quickly and even flourished. He was smart enough to understand that there are different needs at every level. To fulfill his emotional need he had to adapt to cohabitation; as a result, came family, society, and community. However, that was not enough. He wanted more!
He wanted a better life and so he created principles of living and these principles evolved into the science of Vastu Shastra. Based on Vedic principles and steeped in various sciences ranging from psychology, logic, science, climatology, mathematics, and sociology, these rules of construction and design emerged.
We always fear the unknown, but community living helps alleviate this fear. Man did not just conquer his fears; he went on to establish various bonds through friendship and kinship. He learned to trust other people by seeing the good in them―in other words, finding a god in them. It made him realize that through harmonious cohabitation he can achieve peace of mind and good health. This helped him understand the need for yoga and Ayurveda. However, he realized that was not enough to satiate his emotional needs. He then yearned for entertainment and came to Kamasutra.
Realizing that change is constant, man never stopped evolving. The realization that archaic behavior will not help him go anywhere made him change his ways.
He wanted to be treated better, and it became a synonym for being loved.
Then he went on to build luxurious palaces, and these palaces offered comfort. But beautiful palaces and beautiful inhabitants require even more comfort. People had to be hired to look after their needs. Beautification was the mantra, and this created a need for a luxurious lifestyle. This lifestyle needed structure and rules, and thus the art of hospitality came into existence.
